Solanum is a genus of annuals, perennials, sub-shrubs, shrubs and climbers. They often have attractive fruit and flowers. Most are poisonous, but several bear edible fruit or other parts, such as the common foods tomato, potato and eggplant.

Nightshade, as well as referring to the related genus Atropa, is also used for many members of the genus Solanum. The name is also extended to the family Solanaceae.
