Ninja Resurrection
Ninja Resurrection (original title: Makai tenshô: Jigoku-hen) is a Japanese animé OVA from 1997. It was marketed in North America to look similar to the Ninja Scroll OVA, although the two titles were made by different studios.
The story follows Jubei, a wandering swordsman in Tokugawa era Kyushu. At the time, many westernized Japanese Christians were being put down by the government. This story seizes on the idea of Christians being slaughtered and weaves a violent and disturbing tale. A charismatic and holy young leader hopes to resist the government forces attacking his people and preserve their way of life. Unfortunately, he is tragically assassinated by ninjas and his spirit turns into a demon. The demon calls upon many Christian magical powers to slaughter people very quickly. Jubei must step in to end the violence.
Ninja Resurrection carries the distinction of enjoying one of the worst reputations in animé. According to IMDB rankings, AnimeNewsNetwork.com ratings, and consistent negative reviews of many, Ninja Resurrection is in the handful of titles truly scorned, critically. Its stylistic similarity to Ninja Scroll and widespread distribution have brought it financial success in the United States.
