Nonesuch Records

Nonesuch Records is currently a Warner Bros. Records subsidiary. Jac Holzman, founder of Elektra Records in 1950, founded Nonesuch in 1964 to license European classical music. He sold Elektra and Nonesuch to Warners in 1970.

In the late 1960s, the Nonesuch Explorer Series made Nonesuch a pioneer in the field of world music before the term was even invented. The series, which Nonesuch released from 1967 to 1984, consists of field recordings made in Asia, Africa and the Caribbean. For non-travellers, it was the first exposure to musical forms such as gamelan. In 1977, a few of the recording were chosen for the Voyager Golden Record, and sent into outer space aboard the Voyager spacecraft. The series, remastered and with new packaging, is currently being re-released.

In September 2004, Nonesuch released Smile, a long-awaited album by Brian Wilson.
