North Kensington is a census-designated place and an uncorporated area located in Montgomery County, Maryland.

Geography

As an unincorporated area, North Kensington's boundaries are not officially defined. North Kensington is, however, recognized by the United States Census Bureau as a Census-designated Place, and by the United States Geological Survey as a populated place located at 39°2'27" North, 77°4'17" West (39.040709, -77.071296).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the place has a total area of 4.0 km² (1.5 mi²). 4.0 km² (1.5 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 8,940 people, 3,527 households, and 2,197 families residing in the area. The population density is 2,241.4/km² (5,799.5/mi²). There are 3,631 housing units at an average density of 910.3/km² (2,355.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the area is 67.00% White, 13.31% African American, 0.39% Native American, 8.66% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 6.33% from other races, and 4.24% from two or more races. 15.08% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,527 households out of which 25.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.8% are married couples living together, 11.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.7% are non-families. 29.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the area, the population is spread out with 21.0% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 32.5% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 90.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.4 males.

The median income for a household in the area is $65,144, and the median income for a family is $75,554. Males have a median income of $46,631 versus $40,609 for females. The per capita income for the area is $28,816. 6.3% of the population and 3.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.4% of those under the age of 18 and 8.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
