Charles Darwin University

Charles Darwin University (CDU) is located in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. It was created on 1 January 2004 from the amalgamation of Northern Territory University (NTU) of Darwin and Centralian College of Alice Springs. The predecessor institution, NTU, was founded in January 1989 from the Darwin Institute of Technology (founded 1974) and the University College of the Northern Territory (1987).

On 21 August 2003, the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly passed the Charles Darwin University Bill, merging Alice Springs' Centralian College with the university to form Charles Darwin University from 1 January 2004. The inaugural university council meeting [1] was held on 26 November 2003.

The university is named after Charles Robert Darwin, a celebrated English scientist.

CDU is a dual-sector university which means the university offers a wide range of courses, from VET (Vocational Education and Training, formerly TAFE) through to HE undergraduate and postgraduate. The primary campus is located in the Darwin suburb of Casuarina . Additional campuses and education centres are located across the Northern Territory, in Palmerston, Tennant Creek, Yulara, Jabiru, Katherine Mataranka Station , Nhulunbuy (Gove), and Alice Springs.

There are various areas of study offered by the university's three faculties:

  • Law, Business and Arts
  • Education, Health and Science
  • Technology (Engineering, Industrial Education and Information Technology)

The formerly independent Menzies School of Health Research has been incorporated as a school within the university's new Institute of Advanced Studies. The Menzies School of Health Research is a joint venture between the university, the Menzies Foundation and the University of Sydney and is located at the Royal Darwin Hospital , also in Casuarina.
