Open Geospatial Consortium
The Open Geospatial Consortium or OGC groups more than 250 commercial, governmental, nonprofit and research organisations worldwide, encouraging and prescribing standards for GIS data processing and exchange. It was previously known as Open GIS Consortium.
Based on the so-called abstract specification - describing a basic data model for geographic features to be represented - an increasing number of specifications is developed to serve specific needs for interoperable GIS.
The most important OGC specifications:
- GML - Geography Markup Language
- WFS - Web Feature Service
- WMS - Web Map Service
- WCS - Web Coverage Service
- CS-W - Catalog Service Web
