Operation Danny
In between the first and second truce of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, Operation Danny (or Operation Dani - Mivtza Dani in Hebrew) was carried out. The objective of the operation was to relieve Jewish insurgents in Jerusalem and capture Arab territory near Tel Aviv. Arab militias had regained control of the road between the two cities after Jewish partisans had captured it during Operation Nachshon.
The first phase of Operation Danny was to capture Lod and Ramle located along the road. The second phase was to capture Latrun and Ramallah. The operation was carried out under Palmach command utilizing the Yiftach Brigade, the 8th Armored Brigade and two battalions from the Kiryati and Alexandroni brigades. The defending Arab Legion forces consisted of Jordanian army units and irregular Palestinian militias.
The first phase of the operation captured the vital airport in Ramle for the Jewish partisans. Palmach units that terrorized the local inhabitants, killing hundreds of civilians. About 70,000 Palestinians were summarily expelled from their homes in Lod and Ramle by order of David Ben Gurion, an early example of the Israeli state's ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from Palestine. The second phase of Operation Danny failed, leaving Latrun and Ramallah under Arab control until those areas were occupied by Israeli forces during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.
