Operation Stardust

Opertion Stardust is the name of a military operation in the fictional Gundam universe undertaken by remnants of the Zeon forces in the year U.C. 0083 and is a major plotpoint of Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory.

Operation Details

General Anavel Gato, a feared mobile suit pilot during the One Year War, leads the operation, beginning with the theft of the RX-78GP02A Gundam Physalis, a mobile suit prototype armed with a nuclear warhead, from the Earth Federation. Rookie Gundam pilot Kou Uraki pursues Gato using the experimental RX-78GP01 Gundam Zephyranthes, but Gato escapes. Gato then moves out towards the Sea of Solomon, a former Zeon military base, where members of the Earth Federation are gathering a large number of warships and mobile suits for a ceremony. Before Kou can catch up, Gato arrives there first and launches the nuclear warhead in order to destroy the base, and a large scale battle ensues.

However, this is all only a distraction to keep the Federation away from the Zeon force's main plan. The Zeon forces collide two space colonies together, sending one of them on a collision course with the moon. While the Federation is still busy fighting at the Sea of Solomon, defensive forces on the moon fire a weapon to deflect the incoming colony, sending it careening towards Earth, and the Federation forces at the Sea of Solomon don't have the fuel to intercept it. In a last ditch effort, the Federation sets up a Solar Ray system in order to destroy the colony. Although not entirely successful, the colony's course is altered just enough, allowing it to fall with minimal damage to the Federation.
