Ote

Ote or Oda von Haldensleben (before 978-1023) was the daughter of the Margrave or count of the North March Theoderich or Dietrich. According to most accounts she was a nun who was abducted from the monastery of Kolbe by Mieszko I.

In a note in a church document of c1080, the names of Oda and her sons by the duke, who is named as Dagome, may be found. Dagome (usually called Mieszko I) was ruler of the Polanen tribe. This note was a brief summary, written 80 years later, based a document known as Dagome Iudex. Some contest the existence of this document

This reference to the Dagome Iudex is considered by Poles to be the one of the first legal documents of the state of Poland under the Piasts.

The papal reference to the Dagome Iudex mentions Dagome and Oda von Haldensleben and her husband Dagome and their sons only. It specifically does not mention Mieszko's previous son Boleslaw I. For a suggested explanation of this, see the article on the Dagome Iudex.
