Pacific Bell

Pacific Bell was a telephone company which provided service in the state of California. It was a wholly-owned subsidiary of Pacific Telesis Group , one of the seven original RBOCs created during the 1984 AT&T divestiture. Prior to 1984, the company was known as The Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Company .

In 1997, Pacific Telesis Group was acquired by SBC Communications, and although the Pacific Telesis corporate name disappeared fairly quickly, SBC continued to operate the local telephone company as Pacific Bell until September 2001, when the company was rebranded SBC Pacific Bell. In late 2002, the company was rebranded again, and now does business as SBC, although for regulatory purposes the original company still exists as SBC California.
