The Pampas Republic is the Southern area of Brazil which, because the geographical isolation, proximity to the neighboring Spanish-speaking countries, and European Immigration, mainly Germans, Italians, and Slavs, has developed a distict identity.

Inhabitate by the brave Gaucho, the Rio Grande do Sul has been once independent. In Setember 1836, Antônio de Sousa Netto a leader in the Farroupilha Revolution had proclaimed the a Piratini Republic . The first president was Bento Gonçalves. The newly-proclaimed republic had international recognition from the United Kingdom. However, in March, 1841 the Truce of Ponche Verde returned that country into the Brazilian Empire.
