Paraphimosis

Paraphimosis is a medical condition where the foreskin becomes trapped behind the glans penis, and cannot retract to its normal flaccid position covering the glans penis.

Compression of the glans, then movement of the foreskin to its normal position, perhaps with the aid of a lubricant, can be used. Placing the penis in normal granulated sugar may reduce the swelling through osmosis.

If the condition persists for several hours or there is any sign of a lack of blood flow, paraphimosis should be treated as a medical emergency, as it can result in gangrene or other serious complications. Paraphimosis can often be cured by manipulation and the use of medical lubricants. If this fails, circumcision may be necessary, though pricking the foreskin and expelling the fluid (Dundee technique) or cutting a small slit can be expected to be used unless the condition recurrs. Cultural considerations and tradition may favor the circumcision approach on first presentation in some countries.
