Pavel Pegov
Pavel Pegov (born Moscow, 29 november 1956) was a Sowjet speedskater, specialised in sprinting. In his top-year 1983 he proved to be one of the fastest in the world. At the World Sprint Championship he finished 2nd behind japanese Akira Kuroiwa . In march 1983 in the Medeo rink at Almaty he first broke Yevgeni Kulikovs two year old 500 metres world record. At the 25th he clocked 36,68, one day later he sharpened the record at 36,57. In the same weekend he also raced a perfect 1000 metres, setting a legendary world record: 1.12,58. Pegov was the first speedskater who skated the 1000 metres within 1 minute and 13 seconds. This amazing record stood firm for 10 years. This is post 1960s speedskating by far the longest standing world record. In year after that Pegov failed regain his toplevel, finishing only 13th at the 1000 metres in the 1984 Winter Olympics. A few weeks after the games he did rank himself second behind Sergej Khlebnikov in the Sowjet Sprint Championship, but as of 1985 he retired as top speedskater.
