Penetanguishene, Ontario

The town of Penetanguishene in Simcoe County in Ontario, Canada is located in the south east portion of Georgian Bay. Penetang, as it is often called, is a historic community, which was first recognized in 1793 by John Graves Simcoe, through the establishment of a naval base. Incorporated on February 22, 1882, this bilingual (French and English) community has since grown to approximately 8,500 residents.

The historic naval and military base (Discovery Harbour) near Penetanguishene is open to visitors, but no longer offers trips in the two reconstructed sailing ships from the 1812 period.

The name Penetanguishene comes from an Algonquin tribe named Abenaki. It means "place of the white rolling sands".

Penetanguishene also has a significant concentration of Franco-Ontarians, and is one of only three communities in Southern Ontario (excluding Eastern Ontario) where francophones, as a percentage of the community's population, exceed the provincial average of five per cent. (The other two are Welland and Lakeshore.)
