Penhold, Alberta

Penhold is a small town in central Alberta, Canada with a population of 1,729 (2001). Penhold is located in the county of Red Deer #23, just south of Red Deer on Highway 2A. It is 10 km southwest of Red Deer and 128 km north of Calgary.

Area Overview

Originally, Penhold was one of the many whistle stops along the railway, until 1904 when the Village of Penhold was established.

With its close proximity to the city of Red Deer and the town of Innisfail , Penhold enjoys the advantages of a small town without lacking any of the amenities of a large city.

In 1981, the village of Penhold became a town as a result of large population growth in the late 1970s. Penhold, known as "The Home of Future Generations", now lies on both sides of Highway 2A with future expansion planned on the east side of the highway.

Other Information

During the summer, Penhold, Alberta is home to summer training for Royal Canadian Air Cadets. It was also the location of a now-decommissioned Diefenbunker government nuclear shelter.
