Petr Masherov
Petr Mironovich Masherov (Belarusian: Пётр Міро́навіч Машэ́раў; Russian: Пётр Миро́нович Маше́ров), (February 26 (February 13, O.S.), 1918 - October 4, 1980) was the secretary of Belarusian committee of the Communist Party of Soviet Union.
He was de facto the president of Belarussian Soviet Socialist Republic.
He differed from many other leaders of the Soviet times in that he was truly beloved by people for advocating the early form of glasnost, did a lot for Belarus.
Many were considering him the possible successor of then old General Secretary of the Communist Party of Soviet Union Leonid Brezhnev.
He died in the automobile accident when his car escorted by police collided with the truck full of potatos that unexpectedly entered the freeway. It was declared the accident but many still think that it was staged by KGB to eliminate strong potential candidate for the top leadership in USSR. Normally freeways were heavily controlled when such political figures were going somewhere and such an accident was hardly possible.
One of the major streets in Minsk, capital of Belarus is named "Masherov Avenue".
