Phi Iota Alpha

ΦΙΑ (Phi Iota Alpha), "The Oldest Latino Fraternity in Existence orig. 1898 est. 1931", is a brotherhood composed of undergraduate, graduate, and professional men internationally. Brothers of the organization commit themselves toward the empowerment of the Latino community by providing intensive social and cultural programs and activities geared toward the appreciation, promotion and preservation of Latin American Culture.

As an organization whose roots stem back to the late 1800s, they cherish and live by the ideals set forth by their forefathers. In this manner, Phi Iota Alpha distinguishes itself from other Greek-lettered organizations. The organization prides itself in the ability to motivate people, develop leaders, and create new ways to unite its community. They challenge themselves in supporting and developing a strong network for the advancement of Latinos as people. To this end, each member swears loyalty not only to himself but also to a greater cause, his people and Latin America.

La Familia of Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity Inc. was established on December 26, 1931, as the result of a merger of the fraternities Sigma Iota (founded in Louisiana State University in 1904) and Phi Lambda Alpha. In turn Phi Lamda Alpha was formed in 1921 though the merging of three organisations, Pi Delta Phi (founded at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1916), Phi Lambda Alpha (founded in 1919 at the University of California, Berkeley) and la Unión Hispano Americana (founded in Troy, New York in 1898)

The organization has five pillars, respected historical figures from Latin America: Don Simón Bolívar, Don José de San Martín, Don Bernardo O'Higgins, Don Benito Juárez and Don José Martí.
