Phil Bengtson
Phil Bengtson (b. July 17, 1913, d. December 18, 1994) was an American football player.
Born John Phillip Bengtson in 1913, Phil Bengtson played college football under Bernie Bierman at the University of Minnesota in 1930s. Later he would become well known as defensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers when they won five league titles including the first two Super Bowls.
Bengtson replaced the legendary Vince Lombardi when Lombardi retired from the sidelines after the 1967 season. He was only 20-21-1 in three seasons as the Packers coach and he was relieved of his duties after the 1970 season.
Bengtson continued to coach. In 1972, he coached one game as interim coach of the New England Patriots. He finished his career with a 20-22-1 record.
Phil Bengtson died after a long illness at his home in San Diego on December 18, 1994.
