Phyllostachys

See text

Phyllostachys is a genus of the bamboo subfamily Bambusoideae of the grass family Poaceae. It is thought to be originally from central China, but can now be found in many temperate and semi-tropical areas around the world.

Phyllostachys plants have a prominent groove, called a sulcus, that runs along the length of each segment (or internode). Because of this it is one of the most easily identifiable varieties of bamboo.

There are approximately 75 species and 200 varieties of Phyllostachys. The largest varieties grow to be about 100 feet tall in optimum conditions. Many of the large varieties are used as construction timber and for making furniture.
