Pietro I Candiano

Pietro I Candiano, doge della Republic of Venice was born circa 842. He was 16th Doge of Venice in 887. He followed Orso I Participazio (864-881) and Giovanni II Participazio (881-887) as Doge of Venice, elected to the throne at the side of the elderly, and beloved, Giovanni circa April 887. He died on 18 September 887 in the Adriatic Sea. He was killed in the naval battle with the Neretvanians, Dalmatian pirates. He was the first Doge to die in battle for the Republic.
