Podrinje

Podrinje is a geographical region in Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina around Drina River. There is Bosnian Podrinje Canton in Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Podrinje is also a name of proposed new administrative unit of Serbia.

Some political parties in Serbia (notably Democratic Party of Serbia and Sumadija Coalition ) propose creation of new administrative units of Serbia. According to these proposals, Serbia would be divided into 6 regions: Vojvodina (capital city: Novi Sad), Kosovo (capital city: Pristina), Sumadija (capital city: Kragujevac), Podunavlje (capital city: Nis), Podrinje (capital city: Uzice) and Belgrade City Region.

Historical background

Between 1929 and 1941, Drinska banovina (Banat of Drina) was province of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. This province consisted of parts of western Serbia and eastern Bosnia. Capital city of province was Sarajevo (present day capital city of Bosnia-Herzegovina). Province was named after the river Drina.

In 1941 Yugoslav Partisans liberated large territory of German occupied western Serbia. In this territory they proclaimed Republic of Uzice (Uzicka Republika) with Uzice city as centre of the Republic. This large free territory was island of freedom in nazi occupied Europe. Republic of Uzice lived a short life. Very soon, German troops occupied this territory again, while majority of Partisan troops escaped towards Bosnia.
