Pokégear

Pokémon Crystal character

In Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal, the Pokégear is a key item carried by Pokémon Trainers in Johto to help them on their way.

The Pokégear is usually worn around the wrist (like a watch), hanging from the neck (as shown in the image to the right) or sometimes even kept in the trainer's pocket.

The Pokégear's main two functions (which are the only ones available when it is first obtained) is that of serving as a time keeper and a cell phone.

Contents

Watch

When the Pokégear is accesed from the game's menu, the first thing it displays is the day of the week and current time.

Phone

The phone option (depicted as a small cell phone button) stores phone numbers as a name list showing the people's name for the caller to select who they want to call. The only downside of this is that a limited number of phone numbers can be called (only those that have a name associated to them in the list).

The phone option is generally used by a computer-controlled trainer to call a human trainer when he/she wants to hold a pokémon battle again.

Map card

The Pokégear can double as a map by sliding a map card into it (obtained from the Guide Gent in Cherrygrove City). This displays a simplified map of Johto and the person's position on it.

Radio card

The Pokégear can also act as a radio by adding a radio card to it from the Goldenrod Radio Tower. This not only allows the trainer to listen to a different music than the default one for that area, but it also allows them to hear programs such as the Lucky Number Show, a lottery, or Buena's Password, a contest to see if by the time the trainer travels to the Radio Tower they still remember what they heard on the radio show.

Radio songs also can affect how wild Pokémon feel making them attack the trainer more, or leave them alone.

Anime appearances

The only Pokémon anime episode the Pokégear has appeared in is the special episode that was not broadcasted out of Japan titled "Raikou! Legend of Thunder!" because that episode used the main character from Pokémon Gold and Silver (called Yoshi), and the main one from Pokémon Crystal (called Dani), as well as a studious friend of theirs called Jackson, instead of Ash Ketchum, Misty, and Brock who were the team that most regularly appeared at that time.

It also apeared in the third Pokémon movie.

Pokégear-like devices

News appeared on CNN in 2003 about an invention similar to the Pokégear (except for the radio card part). This apparatus uses the Global Positioning System to show the person's position and also allows them to do telephone calls.

The Pokémon Company through manufacturer TOMY created a "real" Pokégear that featured a radio and a watch as well as other pokémon related features. It was available in the Japanese Pokémon Centers and their websites only.
