Polaris (Lorna Dane) is a comic book superhero in the Marvel Comics universe, and a member of the X-Men. She first appeared in X-Men #49 (1968) by Roy Thomas and Neal Adams.

Polaris' mutant powers enable her to control magnetism, including manipulating metals which are susceptible to that force. She can also manipulate the Earth's magnetic field to allow herself to fly. She has bright green hair, another indication of her mutation.

Character history

Polaris was first encountered by the X-Men when a robot duplicate of Magneto convinced her that she was his daughter and used her in his effort to establish the supremacy of mutants over normal humanity. This gambit was revealed and Polaris learned the error of her ways, joining the X-Men for a time. For a while her teammate Iceman had a crush on her, but Polaris didn't truly reciprocate the feeling.

She did, however, fall in love with her teammate Havok, and the two left the X-Men, returning from time to time to assist the team. The pair eventually joined an incarnation of X-Factor as its leaders.

Polaris later went to Genosha to help out with Magneto and keep an eye on him. When sentinels destroyed Genosha, she was one of the few survivors. She was left emotionally scarred after witnessing the massacre while being unable to save them.

Later, some of the X-Men went to Genosha to survey what was going on. They encountered Polaris and she left with them. When Polaris returned to the X-Men she had a darker personality and was more ruthless in battle. She remained this way until some psychic therapy with Professor Xavier, and has since then calmed down.

Polaris had broken up with Havok, and Iceman admitted that he still had feelings for her. The two have engaged in mild flirtation, but nothing serious has happened yet.
