Pollokshields

Pollokshields is an area of the Southside of Glasgow, Scotland. Formerly part of the Burgh of Govan, It is said to be home to Glasgow's largest population of people of South Asian origin.

The local newspaper for Pollokshields is the "Local News for Southsiders".

In April 2004 the community was shocked by the abduction and murder of local white teenager Kriss 'Krypto' Donald. While he was walking with a friend along Kenmure Street, around 200 yards from his home, he was bundled into a car by 4 Asian youths. His body was found the next day on a cyclepath near Hampden Park and it appeared that he had been tortured. In the days after the killing, the area was brought to national attention amid speculation that it would start race riots. British National Party leader Nick Griffin visited the area soon after in what was widely seen as an opportunistic publicity stunt for the upcoming elections that month. Kriss's mother requested that they not visit the shrine and that her son's death not be used by racists to stir up trouble.

As of August 2004, two men have been arrested and are due to stand trial for the crime. It is likely that tight restrictions will be placed on the reporting of the trial because a further two suspects remain at large, thought to have fled to Pakistan.
