Poolesville, Maryland

Poolesville is a town located in Montgomery County, Maryland. It takes its name from two brothers, John Poole, Sr. and Joseph Poole, Sr., who purchased 160 acres (650,000 m²) in the area in 1760.

History

In 1793, John Poole, Jr. used a 15 acre (61,000 m²) tract that he inherited from his father to build a log store and subdivided the tract, selling portions to a number of other merchants. This was the start of Poolesville. The town was incorporated in 1867.

Poolesville is located at 39°8'26" North, 77°24'30" West (39.140540, -77.408461).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 10.0 km² (3.9 mi²). 10.0 km² (3.9 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,151 people, 1,601 households, and 1,402 families residing in the town. The population density is 515.2/km² (1,333.8/mi²). There are 1,630 housing units at an average density of 163.0/km² (422.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 93.57% White, 2.85% African American, 0.49% Native American, 1.09% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.70% from other races, and 1.28% from two or more races. 2.68% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,601 households out of which 56.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 75.6% are married couples living together, 9.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 12.4% are non-families. 9.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 2.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.22 and the average family size is 3.44.

In the town the population is spread out with 35.0% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 24.0% from 45 to 64, and 3.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 96.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $85,091, and the median income for a family is $88,916. Males have a median income of $60,596 versus $42,051 for females. The per capita income for the town is $30,211. 2.6% of the population and 2.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.0% of those under the age of 18 and 7.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
