Port Wakefield Road
Port Wakefield Road is an important highway between the South Australian capital, Adelaide and the Port Augusta. It is designated National Highway A1 and a part of the National Highway linking Adelaide to Perth, Darwin and parts of NSW. It is named after Port Wakefield , the first government town north of Adelaide.
The highway is dual-carrigeway until Port Wakefield and bypasses many towns. The highway then passes through the head of Yorke Peninsula travessing the SA Mid-North region Snowtown, Crystal Brook and Port Pirie before ending in Port Augusta.
Towns
Pt Wakefield Rd passes through SA's Classic Country. The towns are formerly closely linked to the shipment of minerals from the interior. With decline of mining, many of the towns except Port Pirie, has transformed into tourism and regional centres serving the surrounding country and the highway traffic.
