A portal may be:
- A grand entrance, as into a cathedral.

- A kind of remote procedure call interface.
- The structure through which a highway or railroad tunnel exits to the surface.

- A metafictional device, such as a door or doorway, that transports the user from one place to another, distant, place via teleportation or similar means. Such portals are often found in linking rooms.
