Practical Magic

Practical Magic was a 1998 film in which Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman star as witches who carry on a family legacy of witchcraft and tragedy. The film is based on a book by Alice Hoffman.

Plot

The movie's Owen family has had a history of witchcraft that has passed on from every woman in the family on to the girls of the family, Sally (Bullock), Gillian (Kidman) and their daughters. The women in the family never give birth to boys, and therefore, since there are no men barring those they meet and marry, who inevitably die of the family curse, there are no men who carry these powers and romantic tragedy.

Most of the women in their town are apprehensive of their lifestyle and view them as evil and as a connection to the Devil.

As the movie progresses, Gillian's boyfriend Jimmy (played by Goran Visnjic) turns abusive and dies during a drunken binge. He is revived by Gillian but becomes a monster and goes on a rampage. Gillian is spiritually overtaken and Sally hears her telepathically and goes to rescue her. Sally's daughters find Gillian, amd Sally and Gillian assist in Jimmy's destruction.

During this time, Sally loses her husband, but understands that no matter what she does, nothing can bring back her old love, and accepts the task of raising her daughters alone.

Tagline: There's a little witch in every woman.
