Puijo

Puijo is a 150 metres high hill, the famous landmark of city of Kuopio in Finland and a remarkable tourist attraction. The ridge of Puijo is a well-known and popular recreation area. On the hill there is a 75 metres high observation tower, Puijo tower. Puijo is situated close to the city centre of Kuopio.

Seeing the endless mosaic of blue lakes and green islands from the Puijo tower is a strong experience. There is a large primeval forest around the tower. The tower has also a revolving panoramic restaurant, where one can eat local specialities.

Puijo ridge has many paths and a large track network. There are two nature trails. People can move freely on most of Puijo ridge but moving is restricted to the paths in the nature conservation area and in some areas less resistant to use. Gathering of plants is allowed.

In Puijo area there is one the first nature conservation areas of Finland, it was established in 1928. The size of the area is currently about 2.08 square kilometres.

Puijo is a diversified winter sports centre and has annually winter sports events, including cross-country skiing, ski jumping and downhill skiing. It is a training centre of many international ski jumpers. Puijo is a internationally known as a venue for Nordic Skiing World Cup events and its ski jumpers.

Puijo has two downhills, the other is for beginners.

Puijo and Tahkovuori have some co-operation in sports and tourism.
