Puttanna Kanagal
Puttana Kanagal is perhaps the most famous kannada film director. Along with direction he used to write screen play and scripts. He has also directed movies in Malayalam and Hindi. Under his direction many works of Kannada Literature came to life. Born in Kanagal in 1933 he died in 1985 in Chennai. His movies are best remembered for their social theme and musical content - all depicting the rich heritage of Karnataka. In his memory the Government of Karnataka has instituted an award for the best film director of the year.
