Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve
The Río Platano Biosphere Reserve is located on the Río Plátano in the La Mosquita region of Honduras. It has been a World Heritage site since 1980, and inscribed on the list of World Heritage in Danger sites since 1996. It is lowland tropical rainforest. It is full of diverse wildlife and plant life, as well as about 2000 indigenous people. It is composed of mountainous slopes leading down to the Caribbean. It is the intrusion of commerce and agriculture which is threatening the environment of this place. Timber is often illegally taken. There is also a plan for a hydroelectric plant.
