Rainbow Gathering

Rainbow Gatherings are gatherings of people who come together on National Forest lands and expose the ideas of peace, love, freedom and community and try to live free from "Babylon" or popular culture. The gathering's motto is "Welcome Home".

The event is run by a collective, the Rainbow Family of Living Light. The name of the event and the collective comes from a Native American prophecy: "When the earth is ravaged and the animals are dying, a new tribe of people shall come unto the earth from many colors, classes, creeds, and who by their actions and deeds shall make the earth green again. They will be known as the warriors of the Rainbow." [1]

The gathering strives to be non-hierarchical and egalitarian. All operations (including security and maintenance) is supposed to be handled through cooperation and self-sufficiency. Although each event is more or less an anarchy, some ground rules have been reached through consensus by the Gathering Council. Items which are not allowed into gatherings include: firearms, alcohol, radios, tape players, sound amplifiers, power tools, and pets.

Gatherings are also non-commercial. Unlike similar events like Burning Man, there is no price of admission. While selling is disallowed, items may be traded.

Security is maintained by the Shanti-Sena ("Peace Center"). However, rather than being a separate squad of peacekeepers, everyone is encouraged to be prepared to assume the role of Shanti-Sena as the need arises.
