Randolph is a town located in Cattaraugus County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,681. The town was named after Randolph, Vermont.

The Town of Randolph was incorporated in 1826 and contains a village called Randolph. The town was formed from part of the Town of Conewango.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 94.0 km² (36.3 mi²). 93.7 km² (36.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.39% water.

Randolph is located on the west border of the county, next to Chautauqua County, New York.

The Southern Tier Expressway (Interstate 86 and New York 17) crosses the town.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 2,681 people, 1,007 households, and 702 families residing in the town. The population density is 28.6/km² (74.1/mi²). There are 1,122 housing units at an average density of 12.0/km² (31.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.24% White, 0.90% Black or African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. 0.60% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,007 households out of which 31.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.6% are married couples living together, 10.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% are non-families. 25.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the town the population is spread out with 28.3% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 15.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $34,485, and the median income for a family is $39,570. Males have a median income of $30,888 versus $20,586 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,860. 6.6% of the population and 4.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.8% of those under the age of 18 and 4.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
