History

Rede Globo is Brazil's biggest television network. Globo started airing on April 26, 1965 in Rio de Janeiro. In 1966 it started to air in Sao Paulo. The network was aired by Roberto Marinho and the Marinho family.

Rede Globo is present in all states of the country and is the market leader, with a share of 40-60% of the audience. The national news, "Jornal Nacional ," was the first to be transmitted nationaly in Brazil.

It is famous for the telenovelas (soap operas) which, together with the news and football, dominate primetime viewing in Brazil. These are exported all over the world, especially to Portugal where they have a cult following, and are also shown dubbed into different languages.

TV Globo Internacional offers similar programming via satellite around the world, including the United States, Europe, Africa and Japan.

Controversy

Rede Globo had for many years a near-monopoly on viewers, and with it, the power to influence presidential election results, with the use of news favorable to its proprietors' preferred candidates. In 1989, it broadcast an edited debate between Fernando Collor de Mello, who it favoured, and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (current President), destroying the latter's chances of winning.

On January 24, 1984, the network didnt reveal that a protest in Sao Paulo was against the dictatorship. It said the people when there to celebrate Sao Paulo's anniversary.

In 1992 BBC made a documentary "Beyond Citizen Kane" about the power and influence of the network in Brazil. The Marinho family got the tape out of circulation.
