Remo Mancini
Remo Mancini (born May 26, 1951 in Pescara, Italy) is a former politician in Ontario, Canada. He was a Liberal member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1971 to 1993, and served as a cabinet minister in the government of David Peterson.
Mancini did not attend university. In December 1974, at age twenty-three, he was elected as a councillor within Essex County. Mancini was elected to the provincial legislature the following year in the Ontario general election of 1975, defeating Progressive Conservative Frank Klees by just over 2,000 votes in Essex South . He defeated Klees again by a wider margin in the 1977 Ontario election, and easily retained his seat in the elections of 1981, 1985 and 1987.
The Liberal Party was able to form a minority government under David Peterson following the 1985 provincial election, after 42 years in opposition. Notwithstanding his parliamentary experience, Mancini was not initially named to Peterson's cabinet. Instead, he served as the Premier's parliamentary assistant from 1985 to 1987. He was promoted to minister without portfolio responsible for Disabled Persons on September 29, 1987, and finally to Minister of Revenue on August 2, 1989.
The Liberals were unexpectedly defeated by the New Democratic Party in the 1990 provincial election, and Mancini was only able to defeat NDP challenger Donna Tremblay by 212 votes. He served as the opposition house leader from November 1991 to February 1992, but retired from the legislature on April 13, 1993.
Mancini later served as vice-president of the Canadian Transit Company, which owns the Ambassador Bridge linking Windsor, Ontario and Detroit, Michigan. He is also a board member of the St. Clair College of Applied Arts and Technology.
