Rheinseilbahn
The Rheinseilbahn (aerial tramway crossing Rhine) is the only river crossing aerial ropeway in Germany, situated at Cologne. It connects the two banks of the Rhine at height of the Cologne zoo bridge. Since 1957 transported it more than 13 million humans without an accident (2003: 261,000 passengers).
The aerial tramway crossing Rhine was taken in service on 26 April 1957 for the opening of the federal garden exhibition in service. 1963 were adjusted and dismantled the aerial tramway crossing Rhine, because the suspension tower of the right side of Rhine of the new zoo bridge stood in the way. After long discussions, whether drivers were irritated by the aerial ropeway over the bridge it was again developed, it with changed route. The suspension tower on the right side of Rhine was shifted after the south and the distance was extended by a new smaller suspension tower to a deep station lying in the Rhine park. It crosses today the thermal bath "Claudius hot spring" built later.
The aerial tramway crossing Rhine was again opened on 22 August 1966.
Operator of the aerial tramway crossing Rhine is the Cologne aerial ropeway company ltd., since some years a daughter of the Cologne transporting enterprises. The aerial tramway crossing Rhine operates between the months April and October daily.
