Richard Fitzgerald was an Irish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

Details

He was approx. 25 years old, and a Gunner in the Bengal Horse Artillery , Indian Army during the Indian Mutiny when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.

On 28 September 1857 at Bolandshahr , India, Gunner Fitzgerald and a sergeant (Bernard Diamond) worked their gun after every other man belonging to it had been either killed or wounded. They were under very heavy fire, but cleared the road of the enemy.
