Robin
The given name Robin was originally a diminutive of Robert, derived from Rob and the diminutive Old French suffix -in. It is nowadays used as an independent name. The alternative spelling Robyn is sometimes used. Although in England it is generally regarded as a boy's name, it is sometimes given to girls. In the U.S., it is more popular as a girl's name than as a boy's name -- during the 1990s, for example, it was the 393rd most popular girl's name and the 709th most popular boy's name.
Robin can be:
- The European Robin, Erithacus rubecula
- The American Robin, Turdus migratorius
- Any of about 45 species of Australasian Robins.
- An aircraft manufacturer, see Robin aircraft .
- A figure in the Batman comics, see Robin (comics).
- The Reliant Robin, a three-wheeled car built by Reliant.
- An American doo wop group, The Robins, later to find more fame as The Coasters
- The diminutive nephew of Kermit the Frog, see Robin (muppet).
