Roger Clinton

(Redirected from Roger Clinton, Sr.)

Roger Clinton is the name of two members of the family of former President of the United States Bill Clinton.

Roger Clinton, Sr. (July 25,1908November 8,1967) was Bill Clinton's stepfather. He owned a business with his brother, Raymond Clinton. He met and married Virginia Cassidy Blythe, mother of Bill Clinton, in about 1950. Bill, who then had the name William Blythe, the name of his late father, often had a good relationship with Roger, as shown by the fact that he began using the name Clinton. However, Roger Clinton often had problems with alcoholism and sometimes abused his wife, who eventually left him but then returned to him. When Bill Clinton left for college, Roger became very ill, and died of liver cancer. According to Bill Clinton's autobiography, Roger expressed sorrow for his alcoholism and abusive behavior before he died. Roger and Virginia had a son, Roger Clinton, Jr.

Roger Clinton, Jr. (July 25, 1956-) is Bill Clinton's half-brother, the son of Bill's mother Virginia Cassidy Blythe Clinton Dwire Kelley , and first stepfather Roger Clinton, Sr. As a child Bill often had to protect Roger from his periodically alcoholic and abusive father. During the 1970s Roger too became an alcoholic. He became a musician and formed a rock band, which Bill Clinton described in his autobiography as being quite talented. When Bill was already governor, Roger was arrested for cocaine posession in 1984 and served a year in federal prison.[1] His brother granted him a pardon amongst the list of controversial pardons issued on January 19, 2001. Roger continued to spark controversy, however. He had attempted to get his brother to issue pardons to others, and late in 2001 he was arrested for disorderly conduct. He is still pursuing his musical career.
