Roland Perusse
Roland I. Perusse is the author of Haitian Democracy Restored: 1991 -- 1995, a book about the coup-to-democracy period in Haitian political history.
Perusse is "a partisan of Aristide." However, he concedes that Aristide's "...rhetoric was inflammatory and bordered on a call for class warfare." (p. 120) [1]
President Aristide just pointed out the division and inadequacies existing between the Most Repugnant Elites and the poor majority who are actually carrying the country on their backs and receiving nothing in return, no hospital, decent housing, fair employment pratices, recreation, right to life, the pursuit of happiness ect. He had done the same during the Duvalier dictatorship leading to the dictator’s demise and continued on until he was selected to run for he presidency by the same people who plotted to overthrow him one more time. I am sure that if they had received favors from President Aristide instead of having to pay a higher minimum wage to their employees, respect the people’s universal rights as human beings, conform to labor laws as prescribed by the Haïtian constitution, President Airstide would still be in Haïti. When dealing with violent people, who killed some 5000 people during the 1991 coup d'etat that lasted three long years, dumped them in a mass grave called Titanien, it is an imperative that a popular President be ready to defend the people who have voted him in office. The class warfare has been alive and well since 1804 and Aristide is the one that has shown the people they must recognize that fact and that they are human beings like everyone else. What is actually happening right now is the systematic killing, genocide, of President Aristide's supporters in the popular section, Cite Soleil, of Port-au-Prince and there is no distinction being made between children and so called gang members who witnessed the assasination of their parents during the 1991 coup and are ready to defend themselves. One can not put one’s arm down when one knows that during the night the police will come to exterminate one. Every one is a target for assasination for being poor and a supporter of their Democratically elected President Aristide. They thought they were getting raid of their problem by removing President Aristide, but after more than a year of systematic killing, they are still fighting his phanthom and he is becoming more popular than ever. So much for democracy!
