Romanian National Salvation Cathedral

The Romanian Senate has voted favorably on October 12th, 2004, for the construction of The Romanian Orthodox Cathedral in Bucharest. This is built according to a new project. However, details of this particular project have been unveiled 127 years ago, when Romania became a modern nation, having fought and winning in the Independence War against Turkey.

Named "Catedrala Māntuirii Neamului Romānesc" (Romanian National Salvation Cathedral), the construction project and especially its location have been subject of heated national debates. The current project explicitly displays architectural detail from all Romanian provinces and territories.

The official name is Romanian National Salvation Cathedral - Catedrala Māntuirii Neamului Romānesc. Select Committees of the Romanian Senat and the Mayor of Bucharest have been reviewing different variants well in advance of October 2004. This will also serve as the Cathedral for the Patriarchate of the Romanian Orthodox Church.

The synthesis of all architectural styles popular wherever Romanians live is highly symbolic, especially since the majority of Orthodox Romanian Population in the Republic of Moldova had been and still is subject to various, continuous ecclesiastical, and not only political pressures. Indeed, the Moldovan Metropolitan Church has been recognized as a Romanian National Church there only in 2001. Although it existed from 1918 till 1940, it has subsequently been forced by Stalin under the jurisdiction of the Russian Orthodox Church's Moscow patriarchate and only an European Court of Justice managed to bring the Romanian national feelings back where they belong.

Gheorghe Bratiloveanu is the author of the project, shown here from various angles, in a 3-D model. The Saint Patron is of course Saint Andrew, Apostle of the Romanian Nation, and brother of Saint Peter. The Cathedral, the construction of which was Patriarch Miron Cristea's dream, is supposed to cover when it is finished some 1800 square meters, with 87,60 m in length, 52,00 m wide and a height of 95,60 m at the top of the Saint Cross pointer on the central steeple.
