Rose Hawthorne Lathrop
Rose Hawthorne Lathrop (1850-1926) was an American Roman Catholic nun and social worker. The daughter of Nathaniel Hawthorne, she married author George Parsons Lathrop ; the two of them converted to Catholicism in 1891. Rose was well known for her service near and within New York City, caring for the poor afflicted with incurable cancer. After her husband's death in 1898, she became a nun, and as Mother Mary Alphonsa , founded a community of Dominican nuns.
