Rosewood, Florida
Rosewood was a small village in Florida, USA mainly known for the racist riots there in January 1923. Rosewood, a village of mainly black inhabitants, was attacked and burned down after a white woman claimed a black man had raped her. Many inhabitants of Rosewood, including men, women and children, were killed. The details of events, and the number of deaths, remain unclear to this day.
The incident, as well as the town's existence, subsequently slipped into oblivion, but was rediscovered in the 1990s. The Florida legislature awarded compensation to the victims in 1994.
The murders and arson in Rosewood, Florida were the subject of a somewhat sensationalised 1997 film Rosewood.
