Rouge

For the 1987 movie, see Rouge (movie)
For the video game character, see Rouge the Bat

Rouge, or Red rouge, is a form of ferric oxide used as polish and, historically, makeup.

Its chemical composition is Fe2O3 and is found in nature as hematite.

Rouge has traditionally been used for polishing metals and glass. It cuts slower than some modern polishes, such as Cerium Oxide, but is still used in optics fabrication and by jewelers for the superior finish it can produce. It is sold as a powder, paste, or solid bar (with a wax or grease binder).

Similiar abrasives sometimes called rouge:

  • Green rouge, a super-fine chromium 3 oxide used for metal polishing.
  • White rouge, an ultra-fine, dry grade rouge, not as fine as red rouge.
  • Yellow rouge, for finishing gold, stainless steel, platinum and other hard metals.
  • Black rouge, a precision optical grade rouge, offers very smooth, dependable results for final polishing and figuring, ideal for obtaining a very smooth surface with more "luster" than cerium oxide or even red rouge.
