Ryegrass
|}
Ryegrass (Lolium) is a small genus of tufted grasses, belonging to the grass family Poaceae. It should not be confused with Rye, which is a grain crop.
This genus is mostly Eurasian, but it also occurs in America, as Lolium berteronianum, North Africa, as Lolium elegans, and one in Australia, Lolium xerophilum
Ryegrasses contain some species which are important grasses for both lawns and as pasture and hay for livestock, being a highly nutritious stock feed. It is also used in soil erosion control programs. It is the principal grazing grass in New Zealand where some 10 million kilograms of certified seed are produced every year.
But it also contains some species that are weeds which can have a severe impact on the production of wheat and other crops. There are an enormous range of cultivars.
Ryegrasses are naturally diploid, with 2n = 14.
Its pollen is one of the major causes of hay fever.
