São João dos Angolares
São João dos Angolares is a small town on the east coast of São Tomé Island in São Tomé and Príncipe. It lies on a couple of small rivers and is based on fishing and two plantations.
The town is named for the Angolan slaves who settled the area after a ship was wrecked on the Sete Pedras rocks in the sixteenth century, and whose descendants live in the settlement today. Some authorities claim the "Angolans" are actually a remnant of a pre-European population on the island. The townspeople speak Ngola , a unique creole.
