Gameplay

The world's terrorists have targeted America and her allies. As an elite SEAL commander, your team's orders are simple: strike targets of importance within 12 intense international missions quietly and sucessfully, and protect freedom across the globe. Utilizing the best weaponry, technology and training availble, accept no outcome but victory.

Features

This game is filled with many various features; you can pick up an incapacitated enemy's weapon, rifle butt an enemy or kill them with your knife if you are trying to be stealthy.

Weaponry

Socom II features an array of modern day armaments (most of which carry their real world names). Both teams -- Seals and Terrorists -- carry distinct weapon sets with only a few similarities. When selecting his/her weapons, the player chooses a primary weapon, such as an assault rifle or sub-machine gun, a secondary weapon (a pistol or sometimes a locked laser designator), and is given three slots to fill with various tactical devices (such as a thermal scope for sniper rifles) and grenades. Upon completing the single-player campaign on a selected difficulty level (Ensign, Lieutenant, Commander, Captain, Admiral) the player will unlock certain weapons for use in the single-player portion of the game, along with playable characters for the online missions.

Online Play

The online multiplayer portion of Socom II is Ethernet broadband only. In this mode, two teams of up to 16 players (eight on each side, the SEALs and the Terrorists) can combat each other in a game. Gameplay is played out over a series of rounds (the default of which is 11, with the first side to win 6 rounds wins the game) each lasting 5 minutes. Factors such as number of rounds, round type, round time, weapon restrictions, and friendly fire can all be adjusted to the room creator's liking. Each round plays out in a manner similar to the popular online game Counter-Strike, in that when you die, you sit out for the rest of the round and are restricted to a camera view that allows you to switch between your living teammates views. You can also change your weapons loadout by changing the camera view to your dead body and pressing the weapon selection button for your controller preset; during this time you can only communicate with other players on your team who are also dead. Socom II is a largely self-sufficient game and includes a built-in friends list and clan creation section. Player and clan rankings can also be viewed while playing on your PS2.
