SRG SSR idée suisse

SRG SSR idée suisse is the business name of the "Swiss Broadcasting Corporation" -- in German: "Schweizerische Radio- und Fernsehgesellschaft" (SRG), in Romansh "Societad svizra da radio e televisiun", in Italian: "Società svizzera di radiotelevisione" (SSR), in French: "Société suisse de radiodiffusion et télévision" (SSR). SRG SSR idée suisse is known in the English language as the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SBC).

SBC is the public broadcaster of Switzerland, and runs seven television stations and eighteen radio stations in Switzerland's four official languages(German, French, Italian, & Romansh), plus the international broadcaster Swiss Radio International. The company is paid by a mixture of a licence fee of CHF 450.35, advertising & sponsorship. It started in 1922.

The French-language broadcaster is for radio is Radio Suisse Romande and Télévision Suisse Romande. Together they produce two TV stations and four radio stations. It is based in the city of Geneva, Canton Geneva for TV and Lausanne, Vaud for radio. TSR strated in 1954. It is also the main shareholder of the English-language radio station World Radio Geneva (WRG).

Unlike its sister companies, Italian-language broadcasting is done by a single company Radiotelevisione svizzera di lingua italiana. It produces three radio stations and two TV stations. It is based in the city of Lugano, Ticino. Currently it is popular in northern Italy due to fact it is independent of Italian control.

Like its Italian sister-company, the Romansch company is a single company Radio e Televisiun Rumantscha. It provides only one radio station and one TV station due to small amount of Romansch speakers. It is based in Chur, Graubünden.

Swiss Radio International

Switzerland's international broadcaster together with the website Swissinfo is the company's international broadcasting arm and is aimed at ex-pats and people interested in Switzerland. From October 2004 SRI ceased broadcasting on shortwave and satellite, to concentrate on their 'multimedia internet platform'. The swissinfo website is produced in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Chinese & Japanese.
