SS St. Louis
The SS St. Louis was a steamship which is most famous for carrying 963 Jewish refugees, fleeing the Holocaust during World War II. It was repeatedly denied permission to land in safe harbors in North America and was turned back from Florida on June 4, 1939 after being turned away from Cuba. Forced to return to Europe, most of its passengers died in Nazi concentration camps.
The event came to be known colloquially as the Voyage of the Damned, a phrase that was used as a film title when the story was filmed in 1976.
