Sabarmati Ashram

Sabarmati Ashram was established by Mahatma Gandhi in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India.

Sabarmati Ashram, also known as Gandhi Ashram is on the Western banks of Sabarmati River in the Northern Ahmedabad. This ashram was earlier established in the Kochrab area of Ahmedabad in 1915. In 1917 it was shifted on the banks of Sabarmati river.

It is also known as Harijan Ashram and Satyagraha Ashram.

India's movement of Independence

This ashram was host many events in India's movement for Independence from the British Rule. Gandhiji had made this ashram his home. On March 12, 1930 he embarked on a march to Dandi for the Salt Satyagraha. He vowed never to return there till India became independent.

In deciding the place for the new ashram Gandhiji "This is the right place for our activities to carry on the search for Truth and develop Fearlessness – for, on one side, are the iron bolts of the foreigners, and on the other, thunderbolts of Mother Nature." This was because on one side of the ashram, there is Ahmedabad's (now Central) Jail, where prisoners of British government were jailed and on the other side is the (then flowing) Sabarmati river.

Ashram

The ashram has a museum called Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalay. This museum is a story of Mahatma's life in commentary, photographs, personal effects.

The cottage where Mahatma used to live is also preserved and known as Hriday Kunj.
